Dear Brighton and Hove City Council

Do you really intend to destroy the finest unused theatre in the UK?

No, of course you don’t. But that is what will happen if the current planning application for the Brighton Hippodrome goes ahead. You have the power to stop it.

The Grade II* listed Hippodrome is number one on the Theatres Trust list of theatre buildings at risk for the second year running. This is partly because of the irreversible damage that would be done if developers get to convert this magnificent Edwardian theatre into retail, restaurant and cinema units.

No alternative? Your planning committee voted by a two-to-one majority to allow the developers’ scheme to go ahead. You were told there was no alternative way of saving the building.

There is an alternative. But evidence about theatre viability was withheld explicitly on the grounds that it came from a community group: Our Brighton Hippodrome (OBH).

The planning decision was made on incomplete and incorrect information. You have seen the viability study and business plan from Our Brighton Hippodrome that clearly demonstrate that theatre restoration at the Hippodrome is viable, fundable and sustainable.

We call upon you to reconsider the decision and to support a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to restore this unique theatre. The city and the nation will thank you for generations to come.
