British Music Hall Society AGM 2016

BBC4 To Show Another ‘Good Old Days’ on February 5th


BBC4 will be repeating another edition of The Good Old Days on Friday 5th February at 8pm. Originally broadcast on 11th March 1976, the show will star Ronnie Corbett, Kenneth McKellar, Rosemary Squires, Denny Willis and Co., The Looneys and of course, the Players’ Theatre Company.

Let’s hope more will follow.

Vesta Tilley Costume at Hackney

Hackney Museum will be staging a brand new exhibition called The Art Of War: Posters and Propaganda from the First World War. Opening on 23rd February and running until  the end of May, it will feature a few items from the British Music Hall Society archives, such as a costume worn by music hall star Vesta Tilley, along with sheet music and postcards of the artiste.

Ken (‘Settle Down Now’) Goodwin Remembered


BMHS Acting Secretary Edward Thomas will be interviewing comedian Ken ‘Settle Down Now’ Goodwin’s widow Vicki Lane about her career as a singer, principal dancer and choreographer and her life with Ken at the Langham Hotel, Eastbourne on Sunday 7th February at 2pm. Tickets are £9 and the event is being organised by the Friends of Devonshire Park Theatre in the resort.

Buster Keaton Remembered



At the next meeting of the Max Wall Society at the Club For Acts And Actors, 20, Bedford Street, Covent Garden, WC2E 9HP, the presentation will be  Buster Keaton At Cirque Medrano, As Remembered By Arthur Pedlar. Arthur stooged for Keaton for three weeks in 1954 and will re-enact his performance.

Elizabeth Mansfield as Nell Gwyn


Elizabeth Mansfield, who scored such a resounding success at the BMHS’s 2015 Day By The Sea with her portrayal of Marie Lloyd,is appearing at the Park Theatre, Clifton Terrace, Finsbury Park, London, N4 3JP  from 26th January to 20th February in the London premiere of The Restoration Of Nell Gwyn. Written by Steve Trafford, who wrote Marie – The Story Of Marie Lloyd, it stars Liz as Nell Gwyn and Angela Curran as Margery, Nell’s maid.

Performances are Tuesdays – Saturdays at 7.45pm, with matinees on Thursdays and Saturdays (except 28th Jan) at 3.15pm. Tickets are £18 (£16.50 concessions). Previews: £14.50. Box office: 020 7870 6876 or online at

Roy Hudd on Friday Night Is Music Night


BMHS President Roy Hudd will be one of the star guests on this coming Friday’s (22nd January) edition of Friday Night Is Music Night , coming live from Chichester’s Festival Theatre. The show will celebrate 30 years of musical productions at the venue, including, of course, Underneath the Arches. Roy will be reunited with his co-star Christopher Timothy from that show which saw Roy portray Bud Flanagan and Christopher Chesney Allen.

The show will be broadcast on Radio 2 from 8pm to 10pm on Friday 22nd January.

Good Old Days – And There’s More!

BBC4 is repeating a further episode of the popular music hall show The Good Old Days on Friday 22nd January at 8pm. Originally broadcast on 27th April 1973, the show stars Beryl Reid, Roy Castle, Lorna Dallas, Gino Donati and the Valla Bertini. Also appearing will be members of the Players’ Theatre Company and, of course, Leonard Sachs will be chairing proceedings.
