Star of London’s original production of The Sound Of Music at Maidenhead
Jean Bayless, who played ‘Maria’ in the original London production of The Sound Of Music will be interviewed on stage about her career and her connections with Ivor Novello’s music as part of a gala afternoon’s celebration of the Welsh composer’s music that is taking place on Saturday 13th May at 3pm at the Desborough Theatre in Maidenhead. Also taking part will be singers Marilyn Hill Smith, Philip Day, Sandra Watkins and Phil Lee-Thomas. There will also be a tribute to the actor Anthony Valentine by his widow, actress Susan Skipper. Anthony and Susan met when they were both involved in an ITV production of the Novello musical The Dancing Years. Anthony played the Novello role of ‘Rudi’, while Susan played the juvenile lead ‘Grete’. Another link is that the leading actress’s singing voice in that production was dubbed by Marilyn Hill Smith who will be singing in the concert. Clips from that ITV presentation will be shown at the concert together with newly discovered film footage of Novello’s friends paying tribute to the composer.
